Have you ever witnessed a Directors Authority Undermined while on set?

This happened to me on one of my shorts. Largely because I don't know what I'm doing but people can be annoying and confrontational regardless of their role on the set, if you're in charge it's how you deal with them that counts. I don't feel proud of my reaction which included losing my temper and that undermines your authority as well as making you look a dick... I probably should have hit him with the boom but it belonged to miker...

i worked on a film where a single actor radically changed his dialogue, to the detriment of the narrative. man, i wish i wasn't directing that day!

i was probably past caring by that point. if an actor won't do as he's told, sorry, "directed", after the nth time then you just have to make a decision to fix it in the edit to avoid on-set confrontation (if you want to avoid confrontation of course). his meddling resulted in about a 90% screentime reduction for himself - he went from a main character to a periphery supporting role. who cares. i made a risky judgement to "go with it" as the actor saw fit and i don't think the end-product is any worse, just different (and missing some gags). filmmaking is the only time i get to be really spontaneous, and that was quite a spontaneous decision on my part, in the interest of keeping things moving to schedule, but to the detriment of "my vision". it's only a frickin movie. it's not like i'm trying to cure cancer or anything.

It sounds like no matter what someone may do to either accidentally or on purpose "undermine" a director, it's how the director reacts that matters most.

When you dont pay people and they are doing this for kicks and beer then you cant expect them to worship your great VISION, and you'd be an idiot to think they will.

You have to try and build a creative environment and to choose the right people.
I cant do this for shit, and it took me a long time to learn that!
Perhaps there are people skills to learn and develop, but ultimatley it is only frickin movie making!
Just enjoy getting out of the house, meeting up with compadres and try to get the minimum footage you need for the scene - so you dont need to re-schedule anything.
Anything more than that is a bonus.

Well at my rehearsals last week (theater production) no one would shut up and our director walked out in tears, he came back an hour later and gave us this long speech about pressure and stress.

Same day two of the actors were choreographing a fight scene, the director came up to them and told them to try something different but the two actors got all huffy, told the director to leave them alone and criticize it after they finish working on the moves.

He isn?t a great director by the way, its his first show so he?s all over the place.
